Seems Supreme court has ruled that OATLY is not milk

https://www.supremecourt.uk/cases/uksc-2025-0004

no doubt this will upset some and there will be some who will claim the law is not the law despite the Supreme court Ruling.

No doubt this has huge financial implications for Oatly and for the Dairy industry

I had to check, it’s a Swedish Company, phew 😂

I await with interest* their views on 'I can't believe it's not butter'.

I was mildly surprised by the verdict but far more surprised that the dairy industry threw so much cash at the issue.

You are surprised at an industry defending itself.
How strange that an industry seeks to defend its self from an unlawful threat to its trade

I'm surprised they thought Joe P didn't have the wit to tell a product labelled as oat, soya or whatever hadn't come out of the udder of a cow.

For completeness I've not yet read the Supreme Court's decision so have not seen what was argued by the cow boys...

I don't think they were arguing about the use of the word "oat/ soya whatever

The term milk is a legally protected term same as for example a Cornish Pasty can only be made in Cornwall or a Melton Mowbray Pie can only be made in Melton Mowbray etc.

It would be stupid of an industry to allow rivals to break the law and threaten their existence in doing so.

You have a touching faith in Joe P and Josephine P, I fear

Yes. My understanding the referenced court case was about a trade mark registration.

But interesting about the protection as I dink a fair amount of what I considered "Almond Milk" (sold in standard milk 1L cartons, on shelves next to same size/shape/type milk cartons, etc.) So this prompted me to check and it's labelled "Almond Unsweetened" - no mention of milk. Small print on side "A plant based drink with subtle almond flavour"

I am lactose intolerant, but like milk and can't really get on with the plant surrogates. Luckily for me there's lactose free milk drink, which is milk with added lactase (the enzyme I lack). Despite being substantially milk, it isn't actually called milk.

"I can't believe its not milk" as a new slogan for Oatly?
