It is also an "easy win" for him. Most of the country will be seeing the videos and considering it unacceptable. Were Burnham to be more public he's likely get a large %age of the electoate thinking they really don't want thugs in balaclavas markching down their streets in the early hours.

It's almost like Burnham didn't see the little boosts Starmer got when he quickly denounced things for 'easy wins' (e.g. denouncing thugs) but then went back to pissing off progressives but wasn't Reformy enough for Reform voters (clue: it would be almost impossible, as it's a target that only moves rightward).

If Burnham goes the way of Starmer, apparently being under the cuff of Blue Labour and the McSweeney/Glasman cabal, he'll go the way of Starmer, and deservedly so. I did (possibly foolishly) think he had a better political instinct/radar than to fall into that trap.

Exactly this. His hiding away from the subject is little different from Farage disappearing when awkward questions about dodgy finance hit the headlines. His job description involves making difficult choices, though I'd have thought that upsetting fascists wasn't that difficult a choice.

The state apparatus always sides with the fascists. During the early 1930s both in Germany and Spain left wing activities were much more harshly repressed than worse right wing behaviour, with the right wing thugs often "helping" the police in dealing with lefties. I'm very worried by the way this is looking.

At best (at the moment) the reaction of Kent Police to the warnings about Dover looks like complacency or incompetence, or at worst, complicity.
