1. If we do permit new drilling the message to the rest of the world from rich country is "do as we say not as we do". Difficult to expect other countries to address hydrocarbon emissions when we just grant new drilling licenses.

It's only hypocritical if we do say that though, and I'm not sure that we do.

Apparently not. There is no law covering killing of emergency workers and politicians cannot direct the law to be applied differently on an individual basis (eg responding to petitions). Similarly, they cannot retrospectivley change the law (creating a law applying to emergency service workers).

So any exemptions have to apply to all convicted of the same offence.

But they might (apparently) try eg exclude those with sentences longer than some threshold but then it's been said that they wouldn't be releasing enough to create the prison space they need.

I'm not a lawyer and thus just repeating reports I've seen/heard from those more knowledgeable.

It would appear that Andy/No10 are selling a different message https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/crlw5wnykr2t

Oi!

They have lots of coffe shops and Greggs too.

(The relatively recently refurbished market is supposedly genuinely quite good with lots of independent food places but have never been in there myself as I usually aim to get through the town and out as soon as possible).

Cue Newport jokes:

What's the best thing to come out of Newport?....The A48. (This joke pre-dates the M4)

The Germans bombed Newport in WW2....and caused £3 million of improvements.

One aspect that's beginning to concern me about Burnham is we seem to be getting never ending "Burnham is considering ...", "Burnham is looking at ways to ...", "Burnham is going to <massive broad generalisation> details some months away".

Lots of noise but nothing actually being announced. A bit like his new communications dept is on steroids feeling they need to just announce nothing to keep the noise going.

But it looks a bit designed to be misinterpreted eg today Burnham to consider ban on disposable barbecues as wildfires rage in UK - interpreted as he is sorting/reducing these wildfire causes but he actually isn't doing anything, just considering, just thinking about and he may easily decide not to do anything (eg as it would need laws and Parliament is busy). We interpret it as he's on the case, acting but he actually isn't acting.

GLC did a bit of a response to that too. Don’t think they were impressed at outsiders slagging off their home town obviously it’s fine to do it when you live there (or technically there but not really there)

I used to go to the clubs in Newport in the 70s and 80s. Never dared to mention to locals that I was from Cardiff. I always said I was from my original hometown of Merthyr...much safer.

If you don’t actually do anything, you can’t do anything wrong 😊

Re: Early Prisoner Release
Whilst I don't fully appreciate the criminal justice system but with early prisoner release to resolve over-crowding, why are we not using the unused military bases currently intended for housing refugees? Instead of housing refugees, move prisoners to them as a "Open Prison" making it clear that should they abscond not only will they be returned to prison but they will impact any future parole decisions.

Prisoners could be moved to sites far from their victims, etc.

I appreciate the security would be weak but it's higher than just complete release and back to the same area as their victims.

I'm sure it has been considered but I've not seen it raised nor reasons why it can't work.

Would get mired in planning and legal challenges. With best will in the world it'd take a year plus to deliver

We need prison places free by October. If that doesn't happen there will be nowhere to send arrestees and Judges can't sentence for jail time.

Another point raised recently. We (as a country) do not currently have enough manpower to oversee all those under supervision as it is.
Add on more people needing supervision and...
