Boxing Day was always a big day for retail. With Black Friday, shopping online, and all year round sales I can see why many shops don't bother opening on the 26th. Much better deals on Black Friday than Boxing Day sales imo.

Maybe people are wising up. I'm sure it's only a couple of years ago there was T.V. footage of people fighting over Boxing Day televisions they could have bought cheaper online. (Not the same adrenaline rush though)

Having a shutdown is a good thing I reckon.

The college where my good lady works introduced it a couple of years ago, turning all internal servers off on Christmas Adam. It wasn't particularly well communicated though and annoyed people, then there was a complete overload when people logged back in (or tried to).

It may be good for some, but its not for others.

Those alone for example now have more than 1 day alone.

Those who rely on public transport now are unable to go anywhere for longer period etc.

As more and more shops, sports etc do not happen on Boxing Day, there is less for peop0le to do when they are off work

Its an interesting paradox

The sales used to start in the New Year. Starting on Boxing Day is a relatively recent thing
