I assume that's what @Craig the cyclist meant, perhaps he can confirm.

My point is that (a) anything to do with Tax Allowances goes to everybody, or at least in this case those earning £50k, not just folks on low incomes and (b) it's no help to unmarried couples.

Well, I suppose one problem would be how does one define "a couple"?.

Perhaps:

a) best to scrap personal allowances completely, thus putting everyone on a level playing field (on allowances), and begin tax at a low %ge, which escalates, steadily and uniformly, as income increases?

or

b) scrap income taxes completely, and, instead, tax consumption? Bit of a minefield working out those items deemed "luxury" (and thus highly taxed), vs those deemed "essential" or just "nice to have" (and thus taxed more kindly). In anticipation of the cry that such a scheme would impact the lower paid most, those earning more tend to spend more (in general), and, providing the classification of goods and services is well worked out, there could be a degree of choice. (eg one cannot really "choose" not to have food, but, one can "choose" not to have (say) a luxury car).

I don't think you would have to try to hard to be able to disagree with yourself. If no-one else was about was around I suspect you would still start a row.

I'm a bit of a lurky, non-contributing type ordinarily but this has actually blown my mind.

Yeah, then consider that Craig is something in mental health, working with vulnerable and confused people. Care Plans, medication regimes, status relative to the provisions of the Mental Health Act, and possibly even freedom itself, could for some hinge on their ability to appease Nurse Ratched.

"Hello Billy, I need to ask you a few questions to determine if you're well enough to attend your father's funeral this weekend. Would you say 'scum' accurately describes our conservative government?"
"No, absolutely not Nurse Ratched; the opposite of scum. More a frothy, yeasty deliciously nutritious culture. Kombucha maybe, but without the slimy scoby. Ambrosia perhaps?"
"And Priti Patel, is she a Nazi?"
"I can only assume this is a trick question. The National Socialist German Workers' Party ceased to exist with Germany's defeat in World War II. It's not possible that she could be a card carrying member."
"Very good Billy, you've shown real progress in the seventeen years I've been your Nurse Therapist. Final question: if a striving multi-qualified healthcare professional like me pulls down £30 an hour how much does a shuffling, burnt out, non-contributory psychotic like you need to live on?"
"Nothing. Ideally my rent would be paid directly to my landlord, that I might at least be securely monetised in the interests of our society's rentier class, but beyond that the discarded candle stubs from the Catholic church are all the heat and light one could need and daily walks to the food bank are both exercise and character building..."

Yeah, I don't get this at all. I assume you were behind on your word count today, so typed some that seemed to make sense at the time?

I am endlessly saying that those people who did all that hard work and study should expect enhanced rewards when they break through in to their careers over someone who did nothing to learn and then take a job doing something unskilled.

You should try remembering what you post

JOE HELLER

True story, Word of Honor:
Joseph Heller, an important and funny writer
now dead,
and I were at a party given by a billionaire
on Shelter Island.

I said, “Joe, how does it make you feel
to know that our host only yesterday
may have made more money
than your novel ‘Catch-22’
has earned in its entire history?”
And Joe said, “I’ve got something he can never have.”
And I said, “What on earth could that be, Joe?”
And Joe said, “The knowledge that I’ve got enough.”
Not bad! Rest in peace!
