I assume that's what @Craig the cyclist meant, perhaps he can confirm.
My point is that (a) anything to do with Tax Allowances goes to everybody, or at least in this case those earning £50k, not just folks on low incomes and (b) it's no help to unmarried couples.
Well, I suppose one problem would be how does one define "a couple"?.
Perhaps:
a) best to scrap personal allowances completely, thus putting everyone on a level playing field (on allowances), and begin tax at a low %ge, which escalates, steadily and uniformly, as income increases?
or
b) scrap income taxes completely, and, instead, tax consumption? Bit of a minefield working out those items deemed "luxury" (and thus highly taxed), vs those deemed "essential" or just "nice to have" (and thus taxed more kindly). In anticipation of the cry that such a scheme would impact the lower paid most, those earning more tend to spend more (in general), and, providing the classification of goods and services is well worked out, there could be a degree of choice. (eg one cannot really "choose" not to have food, but, one can "choose" not to have (say) a luxury car).
