At this time of year ( ie January) there is often a lot in the media about Vegan / Vegetarian lifestyles and the promotion of Veganuary.

Listening to various people debating the topic on the radio, it seems that for some people the driving factor is an aversion to what they see as animal cruelty in the farming/ food production process. Obviously, I am sure most of us share the aversion to cruelty to animals, although what amounts to cruelty is a subjective opinion.
It set me thinking that in Jewish amd Muslim faith there are khosher or halal processes which many would say involve the use of cruelty to animals ( I don't want to debate if they are cruel or not).

Are there active anti animal cruelty groups within the Jewish & Muslim communities that are campaigning against animal cruelty?

Not that I'm aware of. Halal meat can be from animals that are prestunned but not all Muslims accept it as truly halal. Personally I would like to see all live slaughter banned in the UK, regardless of why it's done. It's weird that we all get hung up on fox hunting when we're killing hundreds of thousands of live animals per year without stunning.

I think the only exemptions to the rules are religious slaughter and individual slaughter eg for own consumption, such as a small holding or small farm. I'm not sure any party has the courage to address religious slaughter.

Thanks.

Like I say I'm not wanting a debate about religion or which slaughter methods are cruel, was just curious if with those communities there were such activists.

A broader aspect to the topic title is how daft politicians can make things when they (as often happens) ignore input from facts and scientists.

eg their recent laws on sentience, Animal Welfare Act (2022) which recognised Lobsters as sentient yet they have only 100,000 neurons in their brains whilst eg cockroaches have 1 million, simplest vertebrate (a gecko) 1.77 million and squid & octopus several hundred million neurons.

yebbut lobsters mate for life. So they MUST be a better species! ❤️

Interestingly, although stunning is in theory more 'humane' it often isn't in practice.

Though just about all slaughter by humans is less traumatic than death amongst wild animals.
