I think part of that is the realisation that messy compromises, pragmatism (rather than dogmatism), and least-worst outcomes are what's required. I still want politicians to have principles and aspirations beyond just getting elected, but those principles and aspirations should inform and guide, not dictate.

That of course is part of the philosophy behind AJP Taylor's statement.

My new political party would be the snappily-titled The Messy Compromise Pragmatic Least-Worst Party.

My politics have always been centre left however, as I've just recently hit 50, they're becoming more left wing.

I despair at what Starmer has spoken about earlier this week. It's frightening imo at how the UK, England specifically, has gone so far to the right over the past decade.

It is certainly confronting. I think Stevo has this right though. It's not a left/right issue these days. Many people are against immigration and the main parties have to get on board or they will be eclipsed.

Personally I have no issues with the general concept of managed immigration, analogous to what Australia, Canada have had for decades. What troubles me is the rhetoric. My take would be that Labour have assessed that moderate language around essentially the same policies would not cut through.

Can't quite be as charitable on the rhetoric surrounding asylum though.

What do you call it when you think the whole rotten system needs razing to the ground? I'm that one.
