And that's just one company. Tesla's market share much lower and declining.
But that's not because the cars are crap. It's because:
  • People don't want to buy cars to enrich a fascist moron. Musk's actions come at great cost to the business. He underestimates how tainted a brand can become.

  • Teslas are very expensive to insure because of their speed and the way that they are made. There are no simple parts that can be replaced. A bumper replacement is a major job. Most company fleets will no longer include them.
As a comparison, my VW ID4 is a similar price to a Tesla Y.
  • It has manual seats (Y is fully electric),
  • User profiles are useless (the Y links to your key or smartphone and adjusts driver seat position, mirrors etc to the driver),
  • The 8 inch touch screen is poor and has limited functions (the Y is a super responsive 11 inch tablet which can do pretty much anything),
  • updates are poor and happen about 3 times a year and never make any difference (the Y gets roughly monthly updates most of which have a functional improvement),
  • The ID4 has no screen in screen for turning, no camera mirrors (the Y has all round cameras and displays a full view from the side of the car when turning),
  • The ID4 has no sentry mode and the forward and rear facing cameras cannot be used as dashcams (the Y has sentry mode for protection and cameras can share footage).
  • The ID4 has a manually opening boot (the Y has an automatic tail lift).
  • The ID4 allows you to program the A/C to heat and cool the car but you can only have two programmes (the Y lets you have as many as you want) and the climate control isn't great - takes ages to cool the car down (the Y is like an industrial hoover when it kicks the cooling in).
  • The ID4 has adaptive cruise control and lane keeping but it's fairly basic, makes mistakes frequently and thinks that cars disappear if they go over a hill or round a corner (the Y has autopilot which is stunningly good in comparison even with out FSD).
  • The ID4 has considerably less range - 250 miles vs the Y's 311 (both standard models)

I will say that the ID4 has really good headlights. REALLY GOOD. Newer Ys have similar matrix headlights though.
Now when you look at the Xpeng G6 - it looks like a Tesla, has tech like a Tesla, has range close to the Tesla. But it's a lot cheaper than the Tesla.

A compelling argument for buying a G6.

The Xpeng G6 is a mightily impressive car. Especially the performance model with 1500hp.

There are still some limitations. It was exposed under drag racing against a Model S Plaid. After 2 drag races the G6 began to lose following races because of overheating of the battery pack, reducing it power for protection.

Now it's extreme example, but still shows that Tesla has a better thermal management in their cars.

Would I buy an Xpeng, most definitely once they become a main player with some dealer backup in the UK- they announced they want 25 by end of 2025.

XPeng are still a smallish manufacturer, which makes them a little bit unknown quantity. The likes of Rivian, Fisher, Canoo either collapsed or struggling to gain traction in the wider field

Xpeng like Rivian have some big backers Alibaba for one , so will likely grow and do well if their vehicles prove reliable long-term

Nope, I had a Tomy AFX one though.

I had TCR - Total Control Racing. I never really understood how they failed to compete with Scalextrix. TCR had no slot so you could switch lane whenever you wanted and meant you needed better corner control to prevent leaving the track. It also had the dreaded "jam" car which was an automatic car that went the wrong way round the track just to mix it up a bit.

Now I'm feeling deeply deprived - my parents weren't well enough off to buy me Scalextric or similar, so only occasionally played on 'posh' friends' sets. 😭

We were lucky as my Dad had a time as a toys & games sales rep. Meant we had access to pretty much everything.
Also meant lots of friends at our house.

IIRC, the most expensive game my brother and I got was the board game Escape From Colditz, and we shared the £4 gift between us, as it was over the limit.

The TCR was a bit of an aberration. I think my grandparents might have bought it for me. Presents from my mum and dad always had to have an educational element (my Dad's influence there). So no Starwars figures. Usually it was stuff that could be built (Lego, Meccano, Zoids, Robotix) or which had an element of physics - e.g. build your own wooden rubber band powered glider.
