Let's hit the kids now says Rachel (with a bit of help from Bridget). There is no alternative.

Did we read a different article? I read that Rachel says "what do you mean cut free school meals, no one has told me!"

Negotiations
'The suggested plans were part of negotiations with the Treasury ahead of the spending review, and other proposed cuts included stopping funding for free period products and axing some dance, music and PE schemes, the paper reported'

500m off the education budget. It's got to come from somewhere. Nobody told Rachel?

Lessons will be learned, not Reeves defends taking free Sabrina Carpenter tickets https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cg70k2l5759o
But at least Labour have committed not to accept free clothes from donors so when she attended the concert (freebie tickets) she was probably wearthing cloths she had to pay for herself.

But beggars belief in terms of her judgement after the scandal earlier in Labour's term last year.

Nah, she was probably still using the big wardrobe of clothes she was given for free last year as soon as they won office.

The simple solution is to make all these freebies taxable benefits.

Nope. When she said £500m off the Education budget she thought it would be taken from the magical hidden cave and not affect any schooling, cos the Education Department is just rolling in cash!

Really quite surprised by the graph below (from a current JP Morgan presentation)

Always disappointing how Labour and freebies are "countered" far too specifically. eg PM will no longer accept donations to pay for clothes And now Rachel Reeves says she won’t accept free concert tickets in future after criticism where what she should be saying is that she won't be accepting freebies of any type in future, not narrowing it down to gifts of a specific type. ie so she won't accept freebies of clothes nor concert tickets which means maybe lobbyists will have to be providing free weekend breaks or Caribbean holidays or posh restaurant meals, etc. which it seems have not been excluded.

Yes, terrible business.

Badenoch and family spent week as guests of climate sceptic Tory donor
Neil Record, chair of Net Zero Watch, hosted the Conservative leader and others shortly before her policy U-turn.

Kemi Badenoch enjoyed a £14,000 week-long “residential” with her family along with a small group of the shadow cabinet courtesy of the Tory donor Neil Record, who chairs a climate sceptic lobby group.

The Conservative leader was joined by other members of the party team at a location in Gloucestershire during the February half-term; most of the shadow cabinet were not invited.

The trip took place about a month before Badenoch U-turned on the party’s commitment to achieving net zero by 2050, saying it was “impossible” for the UK to meet – one of her first major policy pivots since taking over in the autumn.

Are we sure Reeves wasn't there?
Increases in bus and train fares but no increase in motor fuel duty, third runway for heathrow, £22bn for unproven carbon capture, £9bn on a new Thames tunnel...

My greatest disappointment is the sheer lack of risk, vision and long term strategy from Reeves. When the only answer someone can come up with is to cut costs it is clear they are devoid of any real understanding of basic economic growth. Cutting is short term, a sticking plaster. For actual growth you need to create the conditions for it; cut interest rates (I know this is the BoE), make capital investment grants available, stop raising NI and strangling businesses. Start taxing the uber rich to give you the money to do this. Allow businesses to invest and they will increase turnover, raise profits, hire more staff and real world wages go up.

I am still amazed by the basic lack of understanding, if you stifle investment and growth for businesses and then lumber them with increased overheads they start losing money and then start making people redundant.

Be careful, you'll upset the labour luvvies. I mentioned all of the above, except I said don't over tax the Uber wealthy. They will just up and leave the country. If you incentivise these wealthy group will invest, create businesses and generate income for the revenue to tax

I can see why you'd think that; so the same as the Tories, but without taking the £14k bribe. I guess that's better .... right? ...

*Bus fares: every where I look they are capped at £3. Discounts/schemes exist to make that cheaper. Hard to complain about that, I think?
