it's a great shame that Starmer didn't take Thatcher's advice. At least she got ten years out of doing just that before her stubbornness brought her down.

OMFG. Word is that Mahmood is going to become Chancellor. If this is true, Burnham has already failed his first task spectacularly.

I think Mahmood is on major manoeuvres. It might be true, but more likely that Blue Labour is trying to corner Burnham by making it sound like a done deal.

If she does end up as Chancellor, she'll have to recognise that immigration is vital to the UK economy, if she wants to balance the books.

Why? Its a good way to move her out of the way and into a role where a social conservative might actually be useful.

Just my opinion but has shown herself to be incredibly reactionary and as far as I am aware has no economic/treasury background or experience. I agree getting her out of the way is positive but not into a role she appears to have zero credentials for.

Wow! I am now picturing pigs flying across a blue moon with unicorns cheering them on.
If Mahmood is in Burnham's strata then Truss's debacle is in danger of being overshadowed.

Cabinet appointments rarely have any credentials for the roles that they are assigned to.
Anyway - until Burnham takes over on Monday and actually announces his cabinet, it's just PR.

Maybe it's Rachel Reeves who is spreading the rumour, to try to convince people that having someone with any sort of BoE experience, even if it wasn't a glittering career as a chief economist, is better than having Mahmood.

Having “no credentials” for a ministerial post is an essential requirement in the way our system “works”.

Not necessarily true, many usually have some clear experience professionally or have served in Junior roles with a link to their cabinet post. Look at Chancellor over the last couple of decades.

Rachel Reeves - banking
Kwasi Kwarteng - financial analyst
Rishi Sunak - banking/analyst
Sajid Javid - banking
Phillip Hammond - Shadow Treasury Chief Secretary
George Osborne - shadow Treasury Secretary/Shadow Chancellor

It's certainly not unheard of, but usually someone getting one of the big Cabinet posts does have some form of credentials that makes it apparent as to why they have been given the role.

She was previously Shadow Chief Secretary To The Treasury so has some experience in the portfolio. Anything that gets her away from immigration is a good step though and sometimes you have to keep other factions of the Party happy.

Have to admit I did not know that. Fair enough then, she does have relevant experience clearly, I stand corrected.
