Political heavyweight Robert Jenrick said on GB News Burnham needs her as Home Secretary. What more reason could he need?

My Vainhopesville suggestion is that Burnham is going to get her to water down/scrap the worst stuff to piss off people like Jenrick. I'd still prefer she weren't there at all, but there would be pleasure in watching her undo a lot of the stuff she's done up till now. It's th only vaguely rational explanation I can find at the moment.

I am less of the vainhopesville persuasion. Burnham's whole pitch was that Labour have got everything drastically wrong and need to change course now to have any chance at the next GE. That must have been based on the premise of winning back progessives, nearly all of whom wanted Mahmood gone and clear policy reversals. I can only now assume we are getting more of the same and an attempt to appeal to the right on immigration. I just don't see how a rowing back or even watering down works with her still in charge. Like you I live in hope, but it just seems that any real policy change needed Mahmood gone.

I certainly am with this decision. Like BT, I am clinging to some very slim hope that there is some yet to be revealed masterstroke to this that will alleviate our fears, but it very much feels like "if it looks like a duck, swims like......"

Maybe the hope is that even the left could end up giving her some grudging respect by some miraculous means. Vanishingly unlikely, I know, save a Damascene conversion, and I can't think of a precedent, but hey, what do I know? Politics is a bizarre world.
