For me still too early to form a view about Burnham as he really hasn't done much. A fair number of words, fair number of "is inclined to ..." but they don't actually amount to anything. Some of his words and "indications" are a bit worrying (eg more drilling in the North Sea) but he hasn't actually done much about it yet.

But taking over when he did was probably strategically helpful as he's had the summer to consider and research rather than immediately having to face Parliament. But not much longer before he'll need to be actually doing stuff.

That's my worry, but he'd lessen it if he'd take the easy wins of condemning violence quickly, for instance.

He would have done it already if he was going to do it.

The Thetford violence took place while he was on holiday ( which is in itself a bad thing according to the Mail) but Streeting and other ministers have condemned it.

Performative, kneejerk condemnation soundbites and cliches mean nothing. Only action to back up any condemnation and steps taken to reduce that violence before it starts mean anything at all.

Highlighting that there were no legitimate concerns in the mob claims, and that what the mob were trying to do was illegal and that the full force of the law should be brought to bear on the mob is not knee jerk, it is the bare minimum we should expect. Anything less indicates tacit approval.

And the simple action would be to state that the Govt will be taking action to significantly reduce Asylum housing by introducing an Asylum NI Number allowing people seeking asylum to work whilst they wait for their claim to be processed. Money saved to be invested in Qualification conversion courses and English courses. Non engagement in the work force will be monitored and affect asylum assessment.

Additionally the govt will take action to stop small boats by creating an accessible online asylum application process. Anyone entering the country without having engaged in the online process will be deported. Those successful in claiming asylum to be provided with safe routes.

Simple.

By kneejerk I meant producing a statement, while he was legitimately on holiday, probably for good PR on the advice of his advisers. There was no need at that time, for him to say anything. That is what collective cabinet responsibility means.

That's easy to say but not trivial to implement, however, making it clear that far right racist mobs will be dealt with would go a long way.

I didn't see any robust cabinet response at the time. Happy to be corrected.

In other words he should say exactly what you would say.

There’s only one minor problem there.

Well yes compare and contrast the swift response of new PM Starmer with the Southport riots. That unrest was stoked and spreading rapidly. Starmer stomped on it with the full force of the law with courts working overtime to bang them all up.

Nobody cares about that though. Didn’t do Starmer any good as at the time he was being derided over glasses and suits and such.

Everyday someone is demanding their interests to be acted upon the government as a priority, which the next day is forgotten about because of the next persons priority. I really hope that Burnham can cut through the noise and start making the changes he feels fit to improve the governance of the country.

Can’t please everyone, so get ready for disappointment.

That is the sort of cliche that is usually trotted out by politicians after such violence, not always with the words ‘far right’, and means absolutely zilch in terms of effecting a change in behaviour.

There are some things that can wait, and other things need a swift simple statement, if not immediate further action. I suspect I probably weighed in on Raab at the time for shirking responsibilities, so I'd hate to be labelled a hypocrite for not criticising Burnham for a lack of action.

Even in my farming days I told the farm owner to phone me if I was on holiday and there was something he wasn't sure about, to ask what I would do (he was lovely but not the most analytical of decision-makers).

I'm still enjoying the Starmer loyalists on Bluesky pile into Burnham for, well, everything, while ignoring, well, everything.
