Certainly giving off signs at present that he is going to do it his way. I wonder if just basic stuff like this will work in his favour. People seem to suggest they have had enough of traditional politics. I wonder if seeing a politician from a traditional party doing things to break the perceived Westminster bubble will work to change minds and votes?

That's kinda what I'm thinking. And some interesting thoughts floating around Bluesky that maybe these mayoralties might be another way into Westminster: a different sort of training ground, maybe because you have to get stuck into stuff with real people on the ground. And maybe it's been the making of Burnham into someone who can do politics that connect with real people rather than just polling and focus groups. Still needs scaling up to the national level mind you.
But maybe Burnham will be shit and all the above will turn out to be tosh over the next two years.

I suspect that real world politics will end up getting in the way.
It happens to every PM who finds they are constantly fire fighting issue rather than implementing their goals.
And a savage right wing press won’t help him.

That's technically not correct.
Blair lived at No 11 because the flat there was bigger than at No 10 and so better suited to the family.
And the reports I have seen say Burnham will split his time between Downing Street and Manchester (presumably as ordinary MPs go back home at weekends)
And presumably Wilson didn't live there because he wasn't running the country, the trade union bosses were.

Mahmood seems to be burnishing her Reform credentials, with a new anti-immigration policy being announced each day. Seems like a deliberate challenge to Burnham, getting in what she can while Starmer's still PM.

I’m sure many refugees would be more than happy to be in a position to pay something back. But if it is a blunt flat rate of £10k then that is going to be harsh for those back filling the low paid jobs that are desperately needed.

And if they were allowed to work while waiting ages for decisions (being housed by the Home Office), they'd already start paying taxes. It's performative cruelty for Daily Mail & Telegraph readers. I think she's trying to take advantage of the interregnum to burnish her Reform (aka Blue Labour) credentials. Wouldn't be surprised if McSweeney is lurking somewhere just off camera.

the more arguments for good public links to Manchester <-> London he surely gonna take public transport right? But jokes aside there are so many techniques etc. these days to work remotely i don't see the issues you see to be honest. He can still stay in no.10 if needed in case of somekind of crisis, he just doesn't move in there.
