I sometimes think that I am the only person who sees our prison population as a huge financial drain. About £60k per year per prisoner. If we could devise restorative programmes that would reduce future offending, and if those programmes cost, say, £20k per prisoner it would help.

Prevention is better than cure obviously but I think restorative justice for anything other than minor crimes is a non starter. As many minor crimes (and some fairly serious ones) don't result in jail time anyway it wouldn't reduce the immediate prison population much other than quite a bit further down the line. I do think there should be more programmes in prison to both train/educate prisoners but that costs money and staff, and governments of all flavours are loathe to spend money that won't show short term returns.

It's come to a pretty pass when The Telegraph and Dicky Tice denounce masked fascists before the Prime Minister. For someone wwho is quick to get stuff out on social media, he's weirdly silent on blackshirts closing a major travel vector. Burnham is starting to look rather like Starmer but with better eyebrows, afraid of calling out the xenophobes.

The problem is we send far more people to prison and for longer than pretty much any comparable nation - the outlier is the US.

Whether the alternative is 'retorative justice', whatever that is in practice, we need to get the numbers down.

Maybe this is the level of attention it really deserves. They want the oxygen of publicity after all…..

The Telegraph has started turning into a Leftie rag though and Tice needs something to distract from Nigel’s selective hearing problem.

He's too busy not calling out Milei despite the likes of Badenoch and the Dail Mail telling him he needs to get a move on.

If being PM is about a race to being first to respond to everything people are worked up about he's not doing very well.

(Hint: it's not).

No, but staying silent about overr fascist marches being allowed to disrupt a main passenger port seems to me to be a questionable choice.

Indeed it's not, but if 500 blackshirts get a free pass, then you can be sure they'll be back. Good job they didn't hold up any bits of carboard with handwritten messages, then the police would have intervened, and Mahmood would have been saying how dangerous cardboard and felt tip pens are.

They'll be back because of the publicity rather than the lack of shouty words from Burnham.

Aiui the police were caught unawares by this action. If there is a repeat I would hope and expect that the police will not stand by.

To be slightly fair, someone suggested that the murder of Jo Cox by a right wing nutter might have put the wind up politicians calling out this sort of stuff, especially when they can see how Trump's goonish 'base' has terrified even Republican lawmakers to the extent they just have to brown-nose Trump on his batshit crazy nonsense.

I really doubt that has happened with Burnham.

Ann Widdecombe's murder by a (possibly) left wing nutter hasn't stopped Farage or Badenoch spouting their usual crap.
