People would also routinely drink and drive. Addicted, some might say. And that was an out-an-out-killer in more ways than one. That has changed massively in my driving lifetime, and I'd argue mostly because eventually the law made it seem morally wrong, not because people feared getting caught. Smoking, ditto (maybe even more so, and that's not even illegal, in itself.) Attitudes, even based on chemical addiction, can change.

We have differences of opinions.
That is fine.

One of my favourite ever train phone music experiences was on the way to work from Troon to Glasgow. Some wee neds were blasting some sh!te and several folk had already asked them to shut it and been ignored.

Some old boy casually wandered up and asked if he might borrow the phone to call his wife in hospital.

They obliged and he lobbed it out of the window and walked away. Legendary stuff.
Although this is slightly more likely to happen on the way into Glasgow than most other parts of the UK.

I wonder if that graph factors in how ridiculously expensive it is to smoke "conventionally" these days.

I've actually no idea how expensive it is now.

Still a significant tax take, though that'll decline in £ terms as well as GDP% from now on.

Should that be under shoot graphs?
Took me a while to satisfy myself that percent GDP was the same as share of GDP. Sloppy.

Really getting to grips with the challenges facing the country ... now we're going to get 5 mins leeway to purchase a ticket in private car parks as well as (holding my breath here) additional excuses to challenge private parking fines.

Andy Burnham outlines new rules to outlaw ‘rip-off’ private parking fines

We can relax, all our problems solved. Maybe he'll now have time to rescue France from their challenges? Mahybe change their laws to allow people stealing from their own family to me prosecuted? (currently in France if you steal from your own family you can't be prosecuted as it's illegal for them to file a complaint against you for theft (French Penal Code Article 311-12) - that'll put a stop to all their rioting & looting. Or maybe require you be alive to get married ... yes, in France a dead person can get married (Civil code Article 171)
