I wonder if that is where a lot of the problem lies in that the quality and capability of our politicians seems to be declining. Too many say anything, make any promises to get elected.

eg Though I don't actually know any Reform supporters, commentary seems to be that many of those rallying round Farangê doing so as much on the basis of "can't be any worse so maybe try something different" as actually believing in his vision.

I had that exact discussion this weekend with two guys I’ve known for a few years.
They have lost faith with conservatives and labour so are happy to give Nigel a chance.

Their rationale is that it can’t be any worse.

I did try to explain why it could be a lot worse but they weren’t really listening. And Farage is selling a very potent blend of victim blaming and easy answers. None of them appear to understand that they’ve already been sold a Brexit lie.

I know this is a UK question.
But looking at France, they are in a similar predicament. Their government is about to collapse.
There does appear to be a reckoning coming for mainstream politicians who appear to have failed over the last 2 decades.

I'm not sure none mainstream politicians would succeed any better if they were in power

I agree. My view is that the poor reputation of politicians is a systemic thing. We, the electorate, want politicians who offer us more for less, in a way that just isn't possible, and we want it today.

This is where I think PR could help us have an honest conversation about priorities and what is possible. This is because even small parties know they may be in a governing coalition, and be held to account.
