Is this going to be and end to computing as we know it? If it's true that an AI bot is now better than humans at finding and exploiting the security holes in software, hasn't that put us on the verge of reducing humans to to the role of helpless bystanders, with no choice but to accept the word of a bot that their computer system's safe to use? Anthropic claim that it's already found undiscovered holes in all the world's major operating systems and browsers, some as old as 27 years.

How long are they going to be able to keep it out of the hands of criminals? What makes them think it isn't already in the hands of criminals?

One does need to balance claims by companies who are seeking vast speculative funding against "reality". A few adjectives can go a long way to encourage investors with little technical knowledge just as a few adjectives (from marketing and financial departments) have limited use in accurately describing true technical capabilities.

Without having any capability to assess whether Anthropic's claims are credible, a cynic might suggest that they are trying yet another angle to scar us all into accepting the technology as all-encompassing that's the equal of the industrial revolution rather than just another useful tool in the right circumstances.

In the Dune universe, a few hundred years before the action of the first book, humanity did just that. That's why spice is so important, as its mind enhancing properties are required so that humans can perform tasks such as interstellar navigation that otherwise would require computers.

I have to admit to having seen the two recent versions but not having read the book. I suspect the film adaptations have omitted a fair bit of detail!

It is mentioned in passing in the book, can't remember if it is mentioned in the film. The event is mentioned as The Butlerian Jihad. Artificial intelligence was unceremoniously and violently disposed of, and from then on any mechanism more intelligent than a thermostat was a no/no.

It's not a case of "the book". There are 6 Dune books (the main sequence) plus an additional 9 (maybe more) written by his son. Those written by his son are not the same, more (in my opinion) "trashy novel", exciting simplistic stories based on his father's ideas/6 books, readable in a few hours without thought.

They have crammed a heck of a lot into two films on that case! 😉

The recent two films are just the first book (split across the 2 films). The 3rd film (to be release Dec) is one of the subsequent (2nd) book Dune Messiah.

In my opinion a complex involved story. Previous attempts to film the 1st book have been interesting but "difficult" maybe largely due to the complexity.
