I don’t believe the electorate are required to play the same games.

Of course they (the electorate) aren’t. They can vote for one of the candidates standing in their constituency, or, spoil their ballot paper, or, just show their disgust by not voting at all. Since turnout seldom exceeds 60%, clearly a lot of the electorate don’t vote, for whatever reason.
