The current proposal is, so far as can be ascertained, a digital work permit. It literally tells an employer they're OK to take you on. That's all. People whose immigration status under (eg) the EU Settlement Scheme allows them to work can already agree to share that information with a prospective employer.
I've had them shared with me to ensure I've understood their Right to Reside for Benefits purposes.
If that's easier than faffing with passport etc every time I'm TUPEd from one outfit to another it sounds good. Although as I'm jacking in paid work no later than December, when I hit 66, it makes no odds for me.

I don't think laws are going to get that Draconian. If you're talking about actually breaking the law, then they already have a system in place for destroying a person's freedoms, - it's called prison. If you're an ordinary decent citizen then what's there to worry about? It strikes me that a lot of people think very highly of themselves if they think that the Government are so obsessed with them, tracking them, forensically accounting all of their movements and data!
However, I don't think it will address what it aims to. It's a bit like the "dog license" idea. Those who are sensible and law abiding will present their digital ID without issue. Those criminal/illegal/outcasts who refuse to get one will just carry on as normal. Those who currently pay cash in hand to avoid legalities of employment will carry on regardless.

We already have identification in the system NI, passport, driving license etc. There is no need to have a DID, which the government will be able to track every movement, every transaction you make.
Its sinister a government having that much ability to check on your day to day activities.

My bank statements already track where and how I spend my money. Do you think this DID will also do that? How can it, if I pay with my Barclays card? Surely this digital ID will only be scanned when applying for jobs, passports etc? Google collects your precise location if you have it enabled on your device. CCTV is in city centres. Even the recycling centre films me entering and scans my numberplate, as do the big car parks. I guess that info is not immediately available to the Gov, but even if it was, so what? What do you think they will collect on you, and why, and how will it affect you? Just intersted that's all, I'm happy to be informed of things I'm ignorant to

Its a small step to full digital currency. We already have contactless payment via phones.
Once they have digital ID it will plug into phone technology seamlessly.
Then everything you buy, every where you go will be data mined and used.
I'd rather not be tracked or monitored on my spending. We have privacy laws and they should not be eroded for government convenience/control

So there is sufficient privacy currently, no need for any more erosion of it by allowing DID

Ah... the sweet irony of someone who hammers a forum with Twitter posts getting their panties in a bunch over Digital ID and privacy.
I work with a guy who's similarly paranoid and relies on digital aids he thinks are helpful to his life, and we were having a chat about how I was wrong not to be massively arsed about this over lunch.
He didn't have much of a comeback when I pointed out his Fitbit.
