Ha. Serves Labour right for making that lazy assumption and taking voters for granted. I think Elgot is correct.

That's what I call a good win for Spencer. And a bad loss for Goodwhinge.

This is my favourite hot take. I have added subtext in italics:

A spokesperson for the Conservatives - which came fourth, with 706 votes - says Keir Starmer has "killed the Labour Party".

The spokesperson adds: "In losing one of Labour's safest seats, in a constituency that has returned Labour MPs for almost a century, Starmer has shown he no longer commands the support of Labour voters and is now a lame duck leader. Mind you, given that we got over 5000 votes last time and have now lost our deposit whilst Reform took double the amount of votes we have ever had, I think we are completely farked."

"This result shows the Labour government now lacks any support in the country and has no mandate for the terrible policies it is pursuing - increasing the benefits bill, raising taxes, weakening our borders and the armed forces. Equally the Conservative Party have nothing. Absolutely fark all. Please help us.

"Only the Conservatives have the experience, the plans and the team to ensure a stronger economy and a stronger country. I'm being made to say this. It's really hard to do with a straight face but if I don't Kemi is going to do that thing again. Please help me."

Loads of academics are shite at maths. Loads also have zero common sense, or much sense of reality.
Seems a pretty pathetic and arrogant first line to the post by James Ball (whoever he is), though the second paragraph is certainly true.

That's fair, but if you're going to use maths as part of your academic work, it's helpful if you're good at it. Obviously his political critics have axes to grind, but if Legatum internally shelved a report because of the reasons cited here, it's not an unreasonable assumption that not even they were happy with what they saw.

I'm 1.9% convinced.

It may be, but it is also not good news for Reform. The people of Gorton and Denton didn't want what they were selling.

I would have thought that coming second ahead of Labour isn't a disaster for them. Especially given the demographics of the constituency and the likely tactical voting.

It represents the complete collapse of the Conservative Party and that some Labour Voters have gone right wing. I agree with you Steve. It's the strongest right wing showing for that area in a very, very long time.
