They did indeed but I have noticed this shift where some commentators actually espouse socialist ideas and call themselves socialist when I remember a time where if you said you were a socialist you were labelled a communist and a traitor and an enemy of the state. So I think the political spectrum has really broadened and the gap between Democrats and Republicans was as thin as a cigarette paper at a party level.
In the beginning of Obama's push for state provided medical care (now Obama care), there were red necks saying "imagine not having a choice of which doctor you saw, that's a form of communism we don't want communism" !
This when countered with: surely, getting to see a doctor free of charge instead of no doctor is better? No, still communism in their eyes. That disconnect is still prevalent though.

I am not sure an American version of Socialist is the same as other countries. In Republican eyes even a Social Democrat is just a Commie.
