I think it goes beyond exploitation, it is deployed as a tacit justification for her murder. It is the preserve of autocratic govts, present people as so called 'dissidents' and 'agitators' as a means to justify their killing. I don't see anything different here, Renee Good's sexuality and apparent use of pronouns is being used to present her as a threat to American norms and values and therefore her murder is acceptable. I think at this point the US has gone beyond culture wars to executing its citizens. Very worrying times.
