Well, I didn't have Macron on my bingo card as making Starmer look vaguely sensible, in comparison. (I'm assuming the tweet is genuine!)

Copied from Beeb live coverage……

  • UK: Prime Minister Keir Starmer says the UK was not involved in the operation and he wants to speak to Trump "to establish the facts first" before commenting further
  • France: President Emmanuel Macron calls for the Maduro's 2024 opposition candidate – Edmundo González – who he refers to as "president", to oversee a "peaceful, democratic" transition
  • Germany: Maduro "led his country to ruin", says Chancellor Friedrich Merz, but adds the government is taking time to decide if US actions broke international law
  • Italy: Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni says that "external military action is not the way to put an end to totalitarian regimes", but adds it is "legitimate" to defend against "attacks on one's own security"
  • Spain: Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez says Spain "did not recognise" Maduro's regime, but "nor will it recognise an intervention that violates international law". He calls for respect for the UN Charter
  • European Union: High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas says the EU "has repeatedly stated" that Maduro lacks legitimacy, but calls "for restraint" and a respect for international law

Badenoch quiet on the subject as she can’t find an angle to call for Reeves to be sacked/public enquiry/police investigation - delete as appropriate.

Well, she did have a weird sideswipe at "people who didn't know where it was on a map till today" before she sounded uncharacteristically vaguely normal.

I liked the quote of Ken Clarke who said she'd still start an argument even if she was the only person in the room.

France have got a pretty big land border with Venezuela. He's rattled.

Er, Venezuela is in South America. France is in Europe. There is no land border.

If you are referring to French Guiyana which is a French Territory but not France, then yes there is a French Territory which shares a large land border with Venezuela. Not sure why Trump declaring war on Venezuela should have him particularly rattled though.

Interesting, what I read earlier today in the Spanish press was a lot more anodine. It isn't clear, though, if they are recognising the opposition guy as president.

French Guyana has a lot of natural resources, think Greenland and you can guess why the French may be twitchy.

It is actually part of France. It is also part of the European Union. And uses the Euro as its currency.
