Presumably it was quoted because Herzog is regarded as a sage or moral authority so yes it does make it less pertinent if it's made up. As Martin Luther King said, 'Always best to double check random crap off the internet'.

I could have done without a lot of the gags in Jon Stewart's monologue on Pretti, but there were lots of powerful moments, with the end (22.21) being the best.
