Whatever is going on (or no longer going on) there are clear and obvious issues and what I find really sad ia how those close to him (eg family) don't seem to be stepping in and helping him, nobody suggesting more appropriate scripts. They just seem to have abandoned him so we all see his deterioration.

I don't know enough about how the US legislature operates but I wonder if "power of the purse" gives them broader power over Trümp. Trũmp might be able to veto legislation but they can in effect withdraw funding for Trümp's measures. They can block any Trümp appointee confirmations.
Or maybe I just don't understand enough about how US works.

They've probably all learned from his example that caring is weak and all that matters is what you can get out of the situation. At present they still benefit from his behaviour.

I think the suggestion is that they were behind a candidate with the same name as their candidate to stand as the third (independent) option. Then again, if the Republican voters are too thick to read a ballot paper and vote for the correct one it's their problem (I assume the ballot papers state which Party the candidates represent as well as their name).
