An interesting point is that having been Liberal since the 90s and Tory before that, even after the O'Mara years Hallam elected another Labour MP in 2019, although it was closer than in 2017.

The moral of the story from the Lib Dem point of view of course is don't screw over the students if you're the leader of the party and your constituency is in a university area.

Oliver Coppard had a good go in 2015. Maybe Labour should have been planning longer term, seen it as a future win and had a decent candidate lined up. Instead they appear to have grabbed the first volunteer and found themselves landed with O'Mara

Presumably, O'Mara was not just picked off the street, but, was part of the "party system", even if a minor player, didn't anyone notice his "weaknesses"?

That, plus some experiences with our Local Council, cause me to be very suspicious of many in the "system", not just those actually elected.

Given that result and the unpopularity of Clegg and the Lib Dems, I'm not sure why they were so surprised.

Next general election will be interesting, Laura Gordon's had to stand down as the Lib Dem candidate after a good few years building up a support base. I don't know who's going to replace her, maybe one of the local councillors if they do well in the upcoming elections.

The 2017 GE came pretty much literally out of the blue. We were on our hols in the US at the time and thought the 'May calls snap GE' message from our daughter was her sense of humour. Labour, led by Corbyn, expected to be hammered until well into the campaign when May self immolated with the Dementia Tax thing and her wooden performances on TV etc.

The Friday morning, in a very much left leaning workplace, when it emerged that instead of winning by a landslide she'd come close to losing was joyous. Until sher hooked the DUP it almost looked as if there was a minor hope might get a minority Labour government.

Yes, I was here in 2017, but, not sure I follow what the above has to do with O'Mara's suitability as a candidate (for any party)?

Just seen Streeting on the Tele. It was all Corbyn's fault apparently.

The OP has a link to an article by Momentum claiming the scalp of Clegg.
Whoever signed off his suitability as a candidate definitely dropped the ball. He guy was clearly not vetted correctly and had gone off the rails within months.
