What the hell is going on here? No vocal support for the RNLI. No condemnation of Daniel Thomas's lawbreaking. Just the Home secretary laying into migrants again. And Burnham seeming to run for the hills so he hasn't got to admit to having any opinion.

I actually am starting to wonder how they are leading (narrowly) in the polls. It's Starmer all over again, just with better eyebrows.

I read the article. Mahmood’s main beef is with the landings not being detected which is rare these days. She also called out the gang’s new tactics of launching further west.

I’m not a fan but I don’t interpret this as laying into migrants?.

OK. I'll give them a bit more time to see if they can find some appropriate/more appropriate words. But one of my beefs with Starmer was that most of the time if he did eventually come up with vaguely appropriate words he'd missed the window when they would land with the right effect, and usually gave the impression he was waiting to see what the polling was on 'saying the right thing' (or even what the 'right thing' was).

Once or twice he didn't hesitate, and suddenly he sounded like a sincere statesman giving a heartfelt human response... only then to squander it within then next few days with more dithering and equivocation.

Burnham should be good at this.

OK, thanks. In which case, maybe his government needs to do something to protect them from abuse then, rather than the police still arresting grandmothers with bits of cardboard. Yeah, I might be grumpy (blame the health restrictions on my bike riding), but at the moment it feels like they are giving permission for Thomas to continue rabble raising, at a time when there has been quite a success in reducing small-boat migrants and processing asylum claimants more rapidly, and that should be dominating the news, not the New Blackshorts running riot.

There's been loads and loads of coverage of the reduced number of crossings, and comment about why these to boats landing was so unusual. Even your hated BBC have covered this.

For me timing is relevant. The quoted Burnham condemnation (above) is from 9 Sept. Tomo was slashing boats with rescue worker aboard yesterday (22 Sept nearly 2 weeks since Burnham).

It's the same with Mahmood - made the right noises about Thomas not *too* long after the Dover Blockade (though it took a while, IIRC), but the day after he slashed an inflatable boat with someone in it, she's getting all huffy about small boats evading the authorities, and is silent about Thomas. She could do both if she tried a bit harder. It's no wonder that the thugs think they've got carte blanche.

I think the "prejudice" a case is too often used as an excuse to avoid having to express the obvious.

My understanding is the question becomes whether or not it might bias a jury. And condemning aggression towards rescue services hardly going to cause a jury to devide vontrary to evidence (video from gje accused showing himself committing a crime). Or organiser failing to notify Police about a protest.

On occasions it will be relevant but I doubt it in thus case and too often just an wxcuse.
