Who is he? I tried Google and I just got loads of photos of a twat.

I'm happy to remain ignorant.

You’ve answered your own question.

I’d never heard of him when they announced him for Strictly but apparently he was on The Apprentice and has a bit of a reputation for being a disgusting person. Rumoured to be the subject of an ongoing police investigation.

The missing piece of the puzzle is that being an internet personality he's been coopted by the right as sort of an English Everyman, including attending a summer BBQ with JD Vance.

Strictly was going to be an opportunity to raise his profile but he was hit by the double whammy of be a bad dancer and unlikeable.

An argument with the BBC is a salvage plan

Am I the only person on here who has never seen Strictly? Apart from the odd 5 mins caught at other people's houses I've never seen an episode. Like Celebrity Big Brother I've never heard of half the people on it. It seems a national obsession. Am I missing out? What's the appeal?

Never seen it either, not even at other people's houses (nobody I know watches it).

I find it disappointing that BBC puts so much of its limited resources into such programs that seem predominantly about giving those self-appointed "celebrities" social media presence. Basically about giving people who have nothing to say a platform to say nothing (beyond inane social media "content").

I am another one for the never watched column.
Like you, I haven’t heard of any of these so called celebrities.
Two a penny wannabes imo.

Neither have I. The theme music irritates me. The celeb worshiping irritates me. The trailers on iPlayer irritate me. The way the BBC treats it as news irritates me.

The BBC is always caught between a rock & a hard place: if they dont get good audience numbers, they are accused of being elitist and not reflecting that the licence fee is paid by everyone who watches TV (so shouldn't be subsidising elitist stuff); as soon as they do stuff that millions of people watch (i.e., most of the stuff with so-called celebrities), then they get accused of producing stuff that commercial channels could churn out. They really can't win.

I don’t like the show but my wife and her friends love it. She has always loved dancing in all its forms.
At least the show involves learning/improving a real skill, even if it does involve celebrities unlike the absolute tosh that is Big Brother and the jungle one…which my wife also hates.
People always moan about celebrity shows, continually saying they don’t watch and don’t know the ‘celebrities, but if TV channels want viewers it is no point dragging Joe or Jane Bloggs in off the street.

Some years ago, I was working at a particular company. The “boss” (Claire) was a very capable and bright young woman. I noticed that every lunch time, there was a little “huddle”, involving Claire and the rest of the women in the department, and the discussed “Big Brother”. I did ask Claire “surely, you don’t watch that crap”, her answer was “I watch it so that I have something to talk about with the rest of them”

I watch weekly. It's not something I'd watch myself but it's something that both my wife and I will watch and there's not a lot that fits in that venn diagram

While it can be a bit much, laying on the 'journey' a bit thick with tearful dancers, it's provided some amazing TV in its inclusivity

Chris McCausland dancing on live TV while almost totally blind was astonshing

The highlight for me was this from deaf actress Rose Ayling-Ellis (who's name I had to google, but who's dance I'll not forget)

My friend who is a very accomplished dancer loves it too. Went to the live shows. I guess part of the recipe for success is appealing to both good dancers and admiring ones. I find Big Brother even less compelling. I don't think every tv show has to be worthy but isn't it just people sat on sofas chatting? I can't think of a reason to watch it. Seems like a big time investment for tiny moments of drama or humour.
