Along with Stephen Nolan's podcast, the Newsnight reporting on the Tavistock was a small beacon of true investigative reporting from an organisation which has otherwise shown little interest in delving into these issues. That the presenter didn't face pressure to drop the story is more indicative of the status of Newsnight than anything else.
It doesn't negate the fact that the BBC has repeatedly promoted an uncritically pro trans view, omitted to report on certain things, and when it did report didn't provide balance.

For example, this week was the first time BBC news interviewed the Darlington nurses, despite it making the news in other outlets for weeks. There was always space to find out what drag queens think though ...

I half-listened - onandoff - to about 90 mins of BBC R4 last night criticising the BBC over how they've handled this. I'm sure there was more during the daytime news. And in the rest of the week ...

If anyone wants to talk about "holding them to a higher standard", please show me similar self-critique from Sky, The Spectator, GBeebies ...

Exactly. It doesn't happen. And they've been hammering themselves regularly on 5Live as well.

Lyrics from My Plague by the poets of popular beat combo Slipknot are relevant, I think:

"I don't mind being ogled, ridiculed
Made to feel minuscule
If you consider the source, it's kinda pitiful"

So because these outlets aren't reflective on their own coverage the BBC get a free pass too? The BBC is in a unique position and most people would regard them as an authoritative and respected voice on current affairs. We pay them millions a year to do this. Saying other outlets are just as crap is whataboutery.

Bollox it is. It's perfectly clear that the Beeb IS accountable. That's what the news this week has been about! People are resigning. Every major news outlet is sticking the knife in. POTUS is threatening to bankrupt them!

Meanwhile you say "we hold them to a higher standard"; so please tell me, higher than what?? Are any other outlets accountable? What standard do you hold them to?!?

If you can't answer those questions, I'll have to assume you'll only be happy with their output once they only publish views you agree with. Gawd knows I don't agree with everything they broadcast ...

(and to be honest, from previous discussions I really doubt you are that blinkered, generally; but your posts on this topic strongly suggest it.)

I think that @matticus' point doesn't have to do with whether other outlets are as "crap", more that they rarely (if ever) go to the levels of self scrutiny which the Beeb does.

If I've misrepresented that opinion in any way I apologise, but I'm afraid I won't be paying any remunerations.

I think resignation is just the first step you should be taking ....

Finally accountable after many years of there being a problem. In fact brought to account by a report, they didn't self-correct course.

Higher than the standards expected of outlets that nail their flags to the mast by being privately owned and overtly partisan.
I'm surprised that you think the BBC should aim to only be as reliable and balanced as The Sun for example.

You should be surprised. That's not what I think, and it's not what I've said here!

It's quite clear they are far superior to the Sun (and IMO all the rest). They have been under sustained attack for several years, and the critiques would not even have been entertained if they merely aspired to Sun or GBNews levels. For Pete's sake, the latest brou-ha-ha was instigated by an internally appointed reviewer - they actually seek out such opinions!!!
