Not sure if that also means he can't still call himself 'Lord Mandelson'... though that would be some chutzpah if he did.

There's the answer to my question.

He's resigned from the Lords.
Smoke and mirrors. A Life Peer can relinquish a Peerage. They can resign from the House but they keep the title. So Mandleson might have resigned from the House but he's still "Lord Mandleson"

Just like ex Prince Andrew is still a "Duke", just they hope to avoid any real issue by "will no longer use" hoping we won't notice.

(Post crossed with above posts but adding that ex Prince Andrew is pulling the same trick - just he won't use but will retain titles).

Generally you need to be convicted of a crime before we send people to prison in the UK.

Article 6 of the ECHR

The offence being contemplated seems to be misconduct in public office.

Currently that's common law stuff. There's a bill about to move it to a statutory footing but, if there's evidence to charge Mandy it'll be under the law as at the date of offending.

FWIW Joshua Rozenberg thinks satisfying a court of M's guilt might be hard work:

I take some small comfort that he won't be trousering £360 a visit and entertaining guests to subsidised meals. It is a bit fascinating (to me anyway) how people who already have money and status seem so desperate to hob nob with those who have even more of it.

Greed. Pure and simple.
They can never get enough to fill the emptiness of their souls. Reference Donnie.

Sorry folks. We've got him all wrong. The Telegraph is never wrong.

Genuine question if anyone knows -

The radio today is full of how Mandy was regarded as brilliantly clever. And a brilliant operator.

I know these are not new claims, this was all said during the Blair years as well.

Can we actually nail this claim down at all? Where is the evidence for this brilliance? What did he achieve, either for the party or country?

My impression of him is that he is continuously brought down by his own idiotic, nefarious behaviour.

I think (and always have) that he's an absolute cünt, but I suppose his achievement was helping to make Labour electable again.

I suppose his "brilliance" was in his ability to continually manage to convince people to give him yet another high level post after all the scandals. I suppose there is a skill in that for some!

I think it has been obvious for many decades that he is a self serving, greedy bastard. His cosying up to a known paedophile for his own financial benefit (and that of his husband) is sadly not a great surprise.

The one good thing is that some journalists in the UK still have the balls to bring people like him down. How many hundreds in the Epstein files have still gone unnamed and unpunished?

Reported this evening that the leaking of Gov. info was reported to the Police last Sept but quickly dropped by Police as they couldn't find evidence because they didn't look at his personal email accounts!

Trouble is you can't keep a good buoy down.
