That Mr Putin is playing dirty and has started to steal all of Ukraine's stored grain and taking it to Russia.

Meanwhile, the woke westies are looking at ways of removing as much grain as possible from the remaining stores to safety in EU.
By land (rail primarily) will be a very long slow process. By sea from Odessa will require negotiation with Putin and Turkey.
Meanwhile, the prices are climbing sharply and the market price is swinging around by the hour. As a result, merchants are holding stocks as the prices climb exacerbating the problem. Wheat is used for food, starch production (food, paper, adhesives etc), E10 biofuels
Much of Africa is soon likely to be in famine or have to incur huge debts to secure this most basic of foodstuffs. This is the beginning. Harvest will be in Sept and there will be less grain around than last year. 2023 could be even worst.

There are options if the global communities work together to share grain and takes some pain. Smashed avacado on sourdough anybody?

Grain to pain..
But it wouldn't be the first time I've overthinked a play on words .

In the short term yes we will have to be more generous to the truly hungry

However there's no global undersupply of calories , quite the reverse.

But there's lots of the 'wrong' sorts of food in the wrong places..
Hence as many people ill from over supply of empty calories, as malnourished due to not enough..

Although you can be obese and malnourished at the same time...

In the medium to longer term we need to turn away from the over commodification of food for profit only.
And stop relying on just a few countries for just a few staples..
Diversify our cropping.

We need to build back in resilience to our food systems, relocalise and have well sustained food network's rather than the long supply chain network ..

'So called efficiencies, or economies of scale, serve mainly the balance sheet.
Not a balanced nutritous diet.

The Indian farmers saw this when Modi tried to repeal the farm laws that kept small to medium scale farmers in business, and prevented extractive capitalists exploiting agriculture in India for their own gain..

I am not a supporter of what Putin is doing, but, surely, he is merely playing to win? What did we expect him to do?

But I thought he said this was not a war, just a special operation?

You win a war, not a special operation.

The fact that he is trying to destroy the Ukraine economy, and bombing beyond the Donbas region, is worthy of condemnation even though it was only to be expected from Putin/Russia.
