We need to keep buying guns to protect us from people who keep buying guns! It's like a runaway diesel engine.
Coincidentally, a couple of days ago I watched a vlog from an American who has lived in London for the last 8 - 9 years, and she was giving a list of things she preferred about living in the UK. One of those was not having the concern of being shot.

I doubt she was nieve enough to think there were no guns in the capital, but acknowledging that her chances of being the victim of gun crime were far lower than in Florida, where she was brought up.
American truckers can even get semis over guns in their semis.

Indeed. Deaths by firearm in England and Wales 22-23 = 29 (plus 3 in scotland). That's 3209 fewer than in Florida in 2022 alone.

Now of course this is a little unfair as a comparison as Florida has a much smaller population than England and Wales. So let's adjust for the relative population. If we extrapolate Florida to have the same population as the UK we get around 9000 deaths for 2022. Florida has a population of around 22 million compared to the 60 million in England and Wales in 2022.

Now I'm sure this is unrelated but Florida had 518,725 registered guns in 2022 whereas the Eng/Wales had 2 million registered guns. So it can't just be the number of guns. <checks small print> Oh. Florida only requires residents to register guns for concealed carry. It's estimated that 35% of the population have a gun, so that's er... 7.7 million guns of which only a small number are registered and therefore easily traceable to the owner. Remember that the Republicans successfully prevented a digital gun registry and guns sold at local arms fairs don't have to have any sort of registration.

Didn't we have a thread with all the school shootings etc. in one place?

I did a search before I posted and was surprised to find there wasn’t one on this theme. School shootings are mentioned tangentially on other threads (USA mid terms etc) but nothing dedicated to the topic. Was there one on the old NCAP forum, perhaps?

Not just me then! Am sure it was here and not so long ago, maybe it went under an obscure title. Oh well....

We have almost certainly done this discussion before in the old place.

The fact is that to outside observers the US gun culture is bonkers.

But changing the status quo would be impossible. Even fairly obvious stuff like banning automatic assault rifles appears to be impossible due to some weird belief that everyone is entitled to defend themselves.

It’s their problem to sort out, but it’s not going to happen in my lifetime.

Thanks for that.

I think the title didn’t register with me when it came up in the many results.

As a US citizen, you are 86 times more likely to be murdered by a firearm than a UK citizen is. I'm amazed that US citizens seem able to accept that and do nothing about it.

They do.

Where they can, buy more guns.

The disconnect is that the States with the most restrictive gun laws, tend to have the fewest gun deaths.

Studies such as https://giffords.org/lawcenter/resources/scorecard/ do not appear to reach into the minds of the general population. So a State such as Wyoming, which is the least populous State, actually ranks the worst for gun deaths, with almost 22 per 100,000 people. Compare this to New York State, with a population over 30 times greater, which has around 5 gun deaths per 100,000 population.
