To help Brian with his off-topic phobia, I asked AI if phones could match the quality of DSLRs. Fortunately, its answer matched mine. I'd also add portraits as something that looks a lot better with a DSLR.

Phone vs DSLR: what actually looks better?

Landscapes and architecture
Phone can match
Modern phones take excellent photos in daylight, with vivid colours, good detail and automatic HDR that handles bright skies and shadowed buildings well. Great for Oman's mountains, mosques and desert scenery.
Children moving around
DSLR advantage
A DSLR with a good autofocus system and lens can freeze action more reliably, particularly indoors or in fading light. Phones have improved substantially, but can blur fast movement or produce artificial-looking processing.
Wildlife and distant subjects
DSLR advantage
A DSLR with a telephoto lens can capture real detail from far away. Phone zoom often relies on cropping or computational processing, especially at long distances.
Night photography
Usually DSLR
A DSLR's larger sensor can capture more light and preserve natural detail, especially when paired with a fast lens. Phones can produce surprisingly good night shots using computational photography, particularly when the scene is still.

Anyway, back to AI - I think they've got this entirely the wrong way around:

The whole point of academic writing is the hard process of finding lots of stuff about the subject you're investigating, understanding what others are saying, coming up with an argument of your own, then marshalling those thoughts into a written coherent argument. The end result is not the point, and is not what the evaluation should be judging. The evaluation should be judging, through the written evidence, whether the human presenting the end result has (at least) increased their deep understanding of the question at hand through the process. If the main parts of the process have been done by AI, then all they are doing is evaluating AI, not the human's understanding.

This could have went in a few threads but as it it AI driven, is Wiz the new MacAfee?
(My experience with MacAfee is that it extremely hampered my laptop and all "viruses" disappeared along with MacAfee when I got rid).

International governments and agencies have urged websites to address two critical cyber-security flaws in a programming language which powers much of the internet.
The vulnerabilities were found within the PHP programming language, with a fix issued on Wednesday afternoon.
Multiple cyber-security agencies have urged organisations unable to apply fixes in time to consider taking their sites down, leaving bodies such as the Finnish government, Edinburgh council and the BBC to take pages offline.
The flaws were discovered by AI, with cyber-security firm Wiz saying they were the "most severe vulnerabilities ever discovered" by the tech, which is reshaping the cyber landscape.

Comment in El Reg regarding the situation and how the discovery came about.

According to the professor on Radio 4 this morning this was discovered by humans in 2024, but they decided it wasn't worth the bother of fixing it because it was too difficult to exploit.

I wonder how long it will be before the cost of perpetually fighting a running battle with hackers exceeds the productivity benefits gained by using computers in the first place.

Maybe we'll go back to the days when one disconnected from the internet the moment one's essential online activity was completed.

Whenever I am giving any software a trial I check if it will work while disconnected from the internet. If it doesn’t then it gets rejected.

Interestingly, UK Railcards won't (they are dynamic, to stop fraud), so I guess train guards have to accept that sometimes they won't load on request.

Searching my phone for some photos I took of a kiln awhile back...

I thought, that doesn't look much like a kiln

Never found the kiln pics, so I call that a fail.

I just searched 'kiln' to see what cropped up... the only legs were attached to my mum standing in a huge fireplace (no fire, it's OK, she wasn't being cooked). Otherwise photos of woodburners, and pottery at a market.
