Haha, I thought it would be simple enough to upload a photo of French text into Gemini and ask it to translate it into English. Suddenly it got all coy about translating copyright text, and flatly refused to, despite my pointing out that the very model Gemini had been built on relied on the illegal scraping of billions of words of copyright text, and the fact that quoting short excerpts of copyright text is wholly legal. 'Hypocrisy' doesn't even get close.

For someone who seems very critical of reliance on AI you do seem to use it an awful lot. Just think of the data centres all around the country being built just to meet your requirements.

Yes, I am critical of it, but if you read my criticisms carefully, you'll see that I'm happy to admit that it's very good at some things – it's the blanket use of it I'm highly sceptical/critical of, not least because of the aims of the billionaires who want us to get addicted to it for every part of our lives.

If I could switch off AI in my search engines then I would. It all seems a bit unnecessary, for me at least.

I suspect that if one could do an audit of how much AI each of us is already subject to, be it in healthcare, banking, communications with business, weather forecasting, entertainment, etc., it would be a fairly sobering exercise.

Is arguing with it one of the things it's good at?

I never read anything on this forum carefully.

I occasionally do that just for a giggle, even though I realise there's even less self-awareness than Donald J Trump has got, and probably no point other than confirming my biases.

I assume by this stage that no-one using the internet, however self-righteous, can actually avoid sending stuff to AI data centres, one way or another, or (often unknowingly) using their output. King Cnut might might be relevant.

PS. NCAP's filter won't let one type Cnut without changing it to 'daffodil'.

How did it know it was copyright text unless it had previously violated copyright ...

And asking it to translate something that is copyright does not necessarily violate the copyright/.

Easy to do. How depends on search engine but eg for Google just add "&udm=14" to the search URL eg https://www.google.com/search?q=search+clue&udm=14

I've automated it so it's automatically added to any Google search through my browser. I never get the Googel AI Assist stuff in my Google search results.

As it's in the URL no need to be logged-in or anything so your can maintain anonymity.

Tell it you have a licence to copy it. It is very gullible

It works, cool! Thanks. I can't figure out how to automate it but it's a start on reducing my AI footprint which is similar to a Green footprint.
You'll never get to zero but reducing helps.

I'm mostly happy with Duck Duck Go, but it's annoying that it doesn't allow boolean separators to refine searches.
