Isn’t the ‘taxi rank’ system simply that no barrister can refuse a client seeking to appoint them if they are qualified to represent them? Not sure where payment comes into it though I.e. can the barrister insist on charging a high fee that the prospective client can’t pay or if the have to accept a standard fee.

I would assume that there are exceptions, for instance if there's a conflict of interest - it can't be an absolute necessity, even if the bar for exceptions is high.

I severely doubt that wealthy people use the 'taxi rank' system in the first place. They hire who they want.
Of course any barrister could refuse on that basis but clearly didn't. This is all just conjecture until proven one way or the other.

I don’t think she even understood the principle of conflict of interest. Funny how a comedian can see the problem.

Wolfson will have been advising the Tory party on their stance on Russian Sanctions. And my understanding is that the Tories are in favour of them. Whilst their top legal man is also trying to help avoid them.
