Mordaunt is now too wet for the current leadership. Because it seems she can’t defend the indefensible.

I am usually (fairly) non-judgemental and try to avoid amateur psychological diagnosing. However, there is something fundamentally wrong with her, in a very similar vein to Truss I feel.

Both Badenoch and Truss are regular attendees at Tufton Street - follow the American money.

Its getting to the stage where the discarded tories will outnumber the Badenoch loyalists. If they band together to create a new tory party, team Badenoch will shrivel and die or be looking for refuge in Reform who are supposedly too woke, or Restore.

Also, those discarded might have lost favour with Ms Badenoch but I suspect their track record, etc. means they still have favour of their constituency party and the broader electorate. I suspect in discarding them she is also discarding votes.

Yes, she’ll lose either way.

Maybe their numbers will meet a critical level where they can regain control of the Party.

These parties continue to make a common mistake. Policies shift wildly under changing leadership, while the troops are required to remain constant and loyal. That works no better than the claims to 'broad church'.

The Tories have life size cardboard cut out figures of Thatcher in their bedrooms with shoes and handbags to match - such is the adulation. Then they spent the decades after she is out to quarrel against the point where she was most forceful - ongoing membership of the EU on her own terms.

Tories have too often been men with abandonment issues after being sent at a young age to boarding schools, where the last thing they learn - by which I mean the thing they not only never learn, but learn the opposite in debating societies - is loyalty to each other. They are boys missing their matrons and nannies. Together these interlock to form a perfect storm.

I don't forecast that they will change, even if Badenoch gets to keep the job a while longer, though she might enjoy nannying the boys club for longer.

I'm really not sure how we recover from politics being this deceitful, and especially the right wing, thinking that politics is best practised by doing xenophobic stuff on X. It's quite something when even Fraser Nelson has to call them out.

So Badenoch wants to know how she did it?
Rejoin the EU. 👏👏👏 (Won't happen)

IIRC, Meloni was all in favour of Italy leaving the EU until she saw the effect Brexit had on the UK. From my limited knowledge of what she's done, she's been vaguely pragmatic despite her obnoxious noises about foreigners, and, of course, Italy is still part of Schengen, with free movement, the customs union, and the Euro. Though of course it's totally impossible to do a counterfactual where Italy had left all of that behind and gone solo, to 'take back control'...
