Cleverly has quit the shadow cabinet to run for London Mayor.

Sir James said he has told Tory leader Kemi Badenoch he is stepping down as shadow housing secretary, saying: "I must be free to speak about every aspect of London's future and concentrate fully on winning this race."

Pleasantly surprised to see Tugendhat as shadow foreign secretary. I thought he was going to be one of the sensible ones that she was going to de-select.

Agree. I just find the behaviour of our leader of the opposition fascinating in her efforts to try and be relevant.

Not quite sure how sensible he is now... not that it makes much difference with Badenoch's insistence on being loyal to her weird agenda demand.

I can see a useful purpose in it even though "it's not like they are going to ever be in a position to do anything". The purpose I see is that with so much data around invariably used by Ministers to justify their ideological policies, there is a need for people to dedicate their time to analysing the data from a different/opposing viewpoint and to highlight and make public shortcomings in the policy decisions. And with so much data in so many different areas easiest way is to mirror the Government structure meaning each Shadow Minister can dedicate adequate time to hold their opposite number and their data/justifications to public account.

Whilst some "Think Tanks" to some degree serve this purpose and are useful they tend to be more specialised many being little more than funded lobbyists. Whilst Shadow Ministers will often be searching for shortcomings to support their Party ideology but at least then we have some information to form a view on or research further. Not perfect by a log way but maybe better than nothing and better than giving Government Ministers free rein without any scrutiny.

Don't forget that she is so brilliant she was offered a part-scholarship by Stamford University for a course that has never existed and they have no records of her being offered anything

I think the rent is on a flat in London for when she is in Westminster. All MP's are entitled to claim such an allowance. Here's last year's figures on claims:

She's entitled to claim whatever the state entitles her to claim, as are benefit claimants. I suspect she'd get by without the benefit, unlike those who are claiming housing benefit.

As it happens, I do think that housing benefit does not actually benefit the people it should: instead, it's a massive injection of cash into the rental market (over £20bn, last time I looked), most of which ends up in the bank balances of those who own the rental properties, not the people renting who are struggling.

Then you need to campaign for the MP allowance to be means tested like many benefits are rather than making out the taxpayer are paying for her family home. (We're indirectly paying most MP's mortgages actually but as it's unrealistic to expect people to commute on a daily basis from all over the country I don't see much alternative). You could just check this stuff out first rather than posting everything that catch your eye on Bluesky.
