I know that's the case now. I came back from France a week ago.

The whole thing got tightened after 9/11 and the 2005 terror attacks I think.

Prior to that and before juxtaposed borders we regularly arrived in either Calais or Dunkerque late Sunday afternoon with no checks whatsover,

Isn’t that just the “usual” shoddy border control? We have frequently been “waved through” or found the passport check point unmanned, if arriving at unsocial hours, particularly at Dunkirk.
