Switching from the Private Jets, looking at my Portfolio, other than the banks, and Shell, it is all red, so, doesn't look like "Labour is the party of Business".

According to BBC, OBR appear to be saying that the budget will have zero impact on growth over the next 5 years, it will just change to ups and downs a little.

If they (OBR) turn out to be correct, that does not bode well for UK public services and living standards.

Another disappointing aspect to the budget is that despite the extra money for the NHS (although it seems with yet to be decided conditions attached), nothing to help the care sector which is fairly crucial for the NHS to address major bottlenecks. In fact the Care sector will be taking a "hit" through the increased NI rate as well as the lowering of the threshold - so worse for them likely causing bigger bottlenecks for the NHS ....

According to the link I posted above, there were in that year of analysis 1343 flights by private jet between Farnborough and London, a distance of just 31 miles that take just 90 minutes by train.

Even more peculiar is that most of that time is getting from London City Airport to Waterloo. London to Farnborough itself can be as fast as 35 minutes on the right train.

Taking a flight, in a jet aircraft, for a distance of 31miles seems insane. Even with a private jet, surely, the total journey time, from arriving at airport, to exiting destination airport must be even greater than the snails pace figures for going by train? Not to mention the environmental impact of course.

Not always. We don't consider ourselves rich but made sacrifices to purchase our private jet so our neuro-diverse and delicate offspring could get around with a degree of inflight attention proportionate to their exceptional needs; care unavailable on crowded passenger jets containing hundreds of unwashed oiks and low flight-attendant-to-passenger ratios. Frankly, this additional tax is short sighted of Reeves, forcing as it will many middle-class private jetters like us to leave private jettery and piling additional pressure on the Ryanair sector.

OK so you don't consider your self rich, so just how much was this private jet and do you employ a full time crew or are one of you a qualified pilot.

Not private jets but short haul flights and the impact.

London City airport: 54% of journeys take under six hours by train, data shows

It found that 43.7% of the airport’s destinations could be reached in under five hours, 54.1% in under six and 66.2% in under eight. The most popular routes – including Amsterdam, which made up 15% of the airport’s flights in 2023 and Edinburgh, which made up 10% – can be reached quickly by train: Amsterdam takes four hours and Edinburgh four hours and 20 minutes.

This was from earlier this year when London City airport was asking Labour to approve increased numbers of flights - and Labour approved the increase despite the climate impacts. To me it is yet another sign how Labour really isn't taking Climate Change seriously (as evidenced by maintaining the fuel duty freeze).

Those flights will be just moving the aircraft from storage at Farnborogh to City.
Even super rich can’t park their planes at City. It’s too small.

I went to a private school so I have some knowledge of them

As far as the VAT on school fees is concerned then I found this
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/...ivate-school-fees-have-exploded-a7023056.html

and, as said before, it is not all doom and gloom for the schools anyway

but I am sure they will pass try to pass on the full VAT increase to parents and ignore the advantages in other areas
and ignore the above data showing the amount the fees have increased over the last 25years compared to the cost of living
and the salary of the staff

Jeez; this new intake is a bit of a disappointment.

I wasn't aware of this Rishi Sunak parody account.

I think a Whoosh! would have sufficed.

The sound my private jet makes when I'm at the controls flying my kids - one of whom has alopecia, after all - to over-winter in Bali?
Wouldn't that just further confuse our resident literalists?

I'm starting to feel that you are really over labouring an analogy that just doesn't work as well as taking the pi$$ out of children with special needs. There's a girl with alopecia who attends my daughters school - guess why? Also girls with anxiety, eating disorders, autism etc. Oh - and some rich kids too.

Interestingly I discovered that a flight from London Heathrow to Paris on a private jet starts at about £6100 not including VAT or taxes. So a little bit more than the £14 to £75 with Vueling. To be fair, on a Private Jet you get to go to Charles de Gaulle rather than Orly.
I suppose for businesses it's a combination of prestige and being able to fly *exactly* when you want to fly. Plus you go through a private customs channel rather than the normal one.

My guess is that its a way for companies to show off to those they wish to show off to. For celebs and pop stars its a way to get around the world quickly, safely and with all the costumes and such like. If you want your own jet it's going to cost between £1 million and £100 million plus depending on what kind of jet you want.

The other thing I discovered is you can get "empty leg" flights. So when a jet has to go somewhere else but has no passengers the owner will often sell the seats at a 75% discount to help pay for the flight.

No doubt they have a vetting procedure, for potential passengers, to keep out assorted football fans etc ;)
