Well, that's me convinced.

As pointed out by James O’Brien.

There was a huge state operation in biblical times.

Romans paid taxes for things like roads and armies.

and the only reason why Mary and Joseph were in Bethlehem was because the state were running a census.

And how can scrapping the 2 child policy be unChristian?

Minor quibble, there's no historical record of that census happening.

Actually I'm quite surprised. She has a degree - admittedly PPE (general studies), a masters and worked for the Bank of England for six years and yet she continually talks about the economy as if it is analogous to a household budget.
Why did she leave the BofE for an 'admin' role?
Explaining it to the great unwashed. Most if not all chancellors have done that to some extent.

The 20 year old will be one of BadEnoch's older advisers, so he will have come to them.

The 88 year old will be 91 by the time it hits, so she is at the point of budgeting for how much it will cost in total for a couple of years.

I remember being amused by an elderly family friend: when we visited him and his wife when they were in their 80s and several years before they died, rather than say "I think this house is getting too big for our needs", he said "I think we are over-capitalised here". He was a retired chartered accountant.

Meanwhile, two differing POV here:

Apart from the selling off of council houses the other main driver for the housing crisis was when people started looking at houses as investments instead of homes.

My parents are in a home that’s far too big for them. 4 bedrooms 3 reception rooms and half an acre of garden. They should have bitten the bullet a few years ago.
Dad has Parkinson’s now, so I don’t think he will ever leave. Too much stress.
I just think you get used to having the space, and old ages races up on you whilst you’re not looking.
