Budget 2025

My parents are in a home that’s far too big for them. 4 bedrooms 3 reception rooms and half an acre of garden. They should have bitten the bullet a few years ago.
Dad has Parkinson’s now, so I don’t think he will ever leave. Too much stress.
I just think you get used to having the space, and old ages races up on you whilst you’re not looking.

Interesting to have a personal family viewpoint (sorry to hear about the Parkinsons, obvs.) Understandable sentimentality can have quite a big practical cost.

The 20 year old will be one of BadEnoch's older advisers, so he will have come to them.

The 88 year old will be 91 by the time it hits, so she is at the point of budgeting for how much it will cost in total for a couple of years.
Also tax on a £2 mill house it is £2500 pa. So if she lives to be 101 that is £25k.
Which is nothing when you come to sell a £2mill house.

My take on aging based on personal experience. You can have all the best strategies planned out but health circumstances can change very suddenly without notice which completely scuppers your plans. Top tip for the young, your retirement may not be the party you hope for.

Where do they find the money if they're living on a low pension.

Council/government aren't going to wait till you die to collect this mansion tax.

Just because their house is worth a lot doesn't mean they are cash rich.

We will be staying in our 8 bedroom house till we die. We are fortunate to be wealthy to pay for home care when then points comes

I know Cobham very well. It’s full of people like him.

It’s similar for the old lady above. She has lived in the house for 55 years and it has increased by £2million.
That is a price increase of £3k per month every month for 55 years. Tax free.

You invest in your home.

In my (limited) experience of meeting people with houses worth more than £1.5m they are not shy in sharing the value of their houses.
They also come over as being complete knobs. Note, this doesn't apply to the really rich as that behaviour would be below them.

IIRC Billy Connolly told the story about the rich and the farmworkers got on really well in the pub where he lived. Then Volvo man came in talking about nothing but property prices. Knobs.
