There are some things that can wait, and other things need a swift simple statement, if not immediate further action. I suspect I probably weighed in on Raab at the time for shirking responsibilities, so I'd hate to be labelled a hypocrite for not criticising Burnham for a lack of action.

Short shelf in politics - nobody is going to criticise you for being a hypocrite over this as they don’t give a fck.

Well yes compare and contrast the swift response of new PM Starmer with the Southport riots. That unrest was stoked and spreading rapidly. Starmer stomped on it with the full force of the law with courts working overtime to bang them all up.

Nobody cares about that though. Didn’t do Starmer any good as at the time he was being derided over glasses and suits and such.

Everyday someone is demanding their interests to be acted upon the government as a priority, which the next day is forgotten about because of the next persons priority. I really hope that Burnham can cut through the noise and start making the changes he feels fit to improve the governance of the country.

Can’t please everyone, so get ready for disappointment.

Starmer backed those words up with action. That is what made the difference. The calls on here so far have just been about Burnham not producing the words which people wanted.

Even Starmer’s words followed by action only had a short term effect as shown by Thetford.

I agree with your last few paragraphs as no government can or should try to please everyone.

It should be, and he kept her in her Cabinet Role so he either has confidence in her or does not and has muzzled her.

Time will tell.

Fair. It's the interesting one for people who don't have any truck with the hostile policies (e.g. on ILR) and the apparent glee with which she announces the hostility.

I suspect not reappointing (or promoting) her would have been a cause of some trouble for a new PM and he is waiting to see how well she fits with his ideas before making a final decision.

Starting to get in a bit of a Starmer mess with early release. I can understand the pressure with PC Harper’s killers but changing policy on the basis of an individual case that is getting lots of publicity is exactly why Starmer tied himself in knots.

It feels like it would have been very easy to build in exemptions (especially when it would be very small numbers such as people who kill emergency workers in the line of duty) but then there’ll be a campaign for another exemption and another which will all be perfectly reasonable but in the end they’ll have to say no to one.

Agree. He needs to watch the big picture and stay out of the weeds of individual cases. Hoping this is just a performance in order to be able to say well we looked into it but ‘no can do, thems the rules’.

It is a horrible emotive case, but everybody is talking about the passengers. The driver is not being released.
