I think it is a sacred cow that won't actually make much difference when relegated to double lock or single lock.
Most of it is just politicking. IMO.

I suspect that is the case, but at least Burnham has had the courage to risk the political blowback, but having tied it to the social care announcement, he's done what Starmer failed to do which was to defuse (at least partially) objections from those affected, rather than wait for all the blowback before remembering politicians need to prepare the ground carefully.

I saw a post on FB where Jeremy Hunt was bemoaning the triple lock.
Yes, that same Jeremy Hunt that was in the tory party cabinet all that time and was even Chancellor.

Michael Gove is also very vocal in his calls to remove it.
