They don't actually cause the emissions though do they? Unless you double count, the emissions themselves are by the industries that consume fossil fuels.

Plus, those industries extend far beyond fuel and energy. Western life as we know it will fail without oil.

Well, the climate is a bit scrambled, I'll grant you. And if I'd sat out in my garden any longer yesterday, I'd have fried. But I was a chicken and cooped myself up indoors instead, brooding.
