The number might look high but, as it says in the article, “The rise is driven by people arriving legally from outside the EU and the resumption of post-pandemic travel.”
None of that, however, detracts from the fact that she is deliberately mismanaging the asylum system to manufacture outrage among the gammons
The article ges on to highlight the fact that, “Asylum applications, including those arriving in small boats over the English Channel, reached 73,000 in the year to September - a figure that underlines that those migrants represent a very small proportion of all those who arrive in the country in any given period.” (my bold)

Yes, I did read the article.
I also ponder "how can we be short of people, to grow the economy", if net immigration (ignoring those arriving in rubber boats), is higher than ever?
As I have previously stated, I am not anti-immigration (one of my grandchildren, and his mother) are immigrants), and, I did vote Remain, because, among other things, I thought free movement was a positive.

I did, but the article states that net migration is up 504,000, of which 73,000 would appear to be asylum seekers / refugees. After that you have people who used to live in Hong Kong and refugees from Ukraine who can settle here because we like people from Ukraine but not from Albania. The remaining half appear to be students who we wouldn't expect to work because they are paying to study.
The roles that we have shortages in tend to be specialist and it takes time to train people, if training places are actually available. Even with something as basic as lorry driving, there was a glut of people wanting to train but not enough trainers or certification centres to actually allow them to train. With Doctors and Nurses you have to have training places available but we just did the Brexit Shitshow without bothering to prepare, without bothering to do due dilligence and without bothering to evaluate the impact. Hence we are now in the shoot.
