Development goal....

Am wading through the demotivationfest that is our annual 'appraisal' system.
Most goals and objectives were trickled-down from the top, business goals described in various ways etc. We also have 'Development' goals (personal and business/technical development) that are also imposed (we can also add our own).

One of the corporate edicts as part of the appraisal is to do a 'volunteer/community day' as allowed by the company.
It's very noble and nice of them, but I fundamentally object having this a part of my performance/development review.

I'm all for charity and volunteering...but on my own terms. Not to be judged/measured by my employer on this! It's none of their farking business.
Am I being churlish in telling them to stick this up their ringpieces?

Will be submitting it by close of play today.

Don't get me started on the sustainability part...

Never having worked for Big Corp, I have never had to deal with reviews, appraisals and such stuff. The more I hear of it the more I think I would have made a very poor 'company man'.
I presume it's easier for someone towards the end of their career (no offence intended) to be a little bit bolshie.

In all seriousness, when I was at a big corp, we had to do this (our appraisal system sounds a clone of your’s).

We pretty much treated it as a chance to get together, socialise and do something for the community, pretty much the whole team enjoyed it.

I'd say given your employer you could try telling them to stick it with their feeble, attempts to use their Mc'employees as a desultory sticking plaster over their appalling corporate global behaviours.

I agree they might then have cause to call 'Biting the hand that feeds you'.

But if you wanted a swift out, it might be an option 🤔

I work remotely - it would be an individual endeavour....

For the record I am not nor ever have been employed by McBigcorrp.
Yes of course I have to bite my lip to keep earning a wage - but it's getting increasingly difficult.
Yes, I know there are alternative employments, yes I am also investigating them.

Maybe next year I should ask them to change the goal to a 'Protest Day' where we are granted a day off to go and protest against or for something without fear of corporate retribution....

Oh my mistake, I'm sure you'd said you did do work for them..

Well I'm pretty sure you work for someone equally evil such as C@rgill or somesuch, non??

So stop biting your lip you big ninny, and use your insider intel, and last reserves of work energy to be part of the change we all need to see - in the food system - and elsewhere..

I worked for a big Corp. In the '90s. They had all this sort of stuff, but also were refreshingly honest about the level of commitment expected and given to each employee.

"We will support, develop and train you so long as our needs and your skills match. When that is no longer the case we will part company in a respectful way."

"The company is not your family; your manager is not your parent and you are not our child."

That attitude really helped me.

The best way to deal with this sort of crap is to never engage with it at all. If your manager feels the need to fill in appraisal forms, let him, but don’t get involved unless you actually want to. Remember, none of it is for your benefit.

Similarly, if your own staff want a chat about how they’re doing and how you might help them with training and other development opportunities, have that talk and follow up with action.

Everything else is bullshit.

Are you thinking of a No Fly Day?? :-) x

slightly more seriously ... someone of your intellect might be able to document a protest day (for some charidee) as a Corporate-approved Community Action day, maybe?
