A by-election took place in Trinity ward on Thursday 27 August 2026, following the resignation of Councillor Lizzy Dobres. Seems the people of Wandsworth enjoy the sight of Burnham bouncing in a bikini. Who knew?

I don't take much from local election results, but I think non-righties are happy to vote tactically to keep the xenophobes out, but the xenophobes hate each other enough not to be willing to compromise.

The Greens won a by-election yesterday in Dover by just 34 votes - previously a bit of a Tory stronghold. Rupert Lowe's Restore party took enough out of Reform to let the Greens take the win.

DEFRIEND, James - Reform UK: 733 (27.4%)

HAWKES, David - Local Conservatives: 456 (17%)

Surely someone with a surname like Defriend should be getting sent back to France?

I was thinking it would be the way a black cartoon character would have been portrayed in the sort of things available when I was a kid "he was de friend bwana". Times have changed!

Have you ever sung the Tippett Five [...] Spirituals from A Child of Our Time? They are fantastic musically, but, erm, Tippett explains how to sing them with a quasi black accent. Erm, yes. And they were widely known as, erm...

The thing is, he uses them in a completely sympathetic way, using them as representing a dispossessed and downtrodden people, and at the time his titling and pronunciation explanation drew no particular attention. Thankfully times have changed.

Polanski faces Green rival in his pursuit of Keir Starmer’s old seat

...
In a post on Instagram on Monday, Chowdhury said he had received nominations from six other Camden Green councillors, meaning seven of the 10 Greens on the authority oppose Polanski being selected.

Among those backing Chowdhury is Lorna Russell, the group leader in Camden for the Green party, which is the official opposition to Labour.
The local candidate is also making a rount that might sit well with the electorate (maybe) "a local councillor saying he is also seeking the nomination, and that the seat does not need “a politician you’ll only see on a leaflet”."

Not enough. The greens had a last minute crisis in Brixton after two local black candidates - rare in the Green Party - had posted some pro-Palestine memes. It probably would have been better if these had drawn less particular attention, and/or been explained and 'forgiven' by the party given the tense climate and torn solidarity issues.

Too much scaredness of social media 'opinion' and not enough effort to come together in solidarity. Not to say differences and careless talk should be underplayed, but priorities are still distorted beyond comprehension by Public Relations.

I sang along with Paul Robeson and Mohammed Ali as a kid with no embarrassment. Both folk heroes where i come from.
