It is funny, but it's caused by the same arrangement that resulted in him dodging tax by effectively living as an itenerant. if your understanding of the system you seek to be in charge of is at the level of a secondary school pupil, I do think it's a problem.

It is also a problem if you don't understand the democratic process or be engaged enough to know whether or not you are actually in it.

He was found not to have any arrangement to dodge tax.

This is not an area of expertise for me, but I was given some understanding of this from a friend who also lives on a houseboat. From their account, they say that Council Tax is to be paid from mooring fees. However owners of moorings put in place conditions including that boat owners must move on within a calender month, and in this way they avoid being responsible for paying the Council tax to the local authority. This leaves the boat owner in the position of finding a new mooring without necessarily being in full knowledge of the tax dodging being carried out by mooring facilitators. The duty to pay the tax is on the moorings provider not the boat owner. (So I am told).

To show his goodwill, Zack and his partner have paid the equivalent sum to charity (he says).

When it comes to the electoral register, you should be a resident, but if you become obliged to keep moving on due to the above, then registration becomes difficult, as without a permanent mooring the Council may treat you as a person with no fixed address. Likewise my friend has in the past been prevented from being on the electoral register (they say).

This isn't right. He's been cleared by the GLA of code of conduct violations, but this is nothing to do with the council. He has also said he thought it was covered by mooring fees, but admitted an error. I don't think we know whether or not he actually owes anything yet.

But he's still in that situation of being wrong somehow, because of the physical address he was using.

This is one of those things that us normal people mess up all the time, but us normal people arent pretending to be future statemen.

It's the same reason Rayner was so harshly treated and the same reason Farage should be hounded to the nth degree about the 5 million quid he is claiming he no longer has and that does not unduly influence his conduct in public office.

He admitted early on that he ''may be in error''. This is more or less the same as admitting that he didn't know.

Addendum. AI confirms most of your points, but also notes ...

Waltham Forest Council, which the Green Party seized control of at the local elections on May 7, has said it is “making assessments and taking legal advice on several complex factors unique to moorings” at the marina in the Lee Valley Park.

So I'll just note that if a local authority needs to consult lawyers before they can determine what tax is due, then perhaps give Zack a little slack until the matter is settled.

As far as I can tell from reports, early on he obfuscated, then admitted an error and undertook to pay any tax he might owe.

There 100% is an error, because he was using a dwelling he didn't live in as his voter registered address, which according to the big red lettering threatening legal action if I put anything inaccurate in the registration form, at the end of the letters I get, would be considered by most people to be a mistake. Clearly he wasn't alone and it's not that serious, other than he wants to be prime minister.

But as I said I don't think we know as yet whether that error is unpaid council tax.

I think I answered the points above. Just to reassure you, Zack may have the ambition to be Prime Minister, but folk need to remember, it isn't a given. His term as leader of the Party is short-lived, be must face selection again. Secondly, as leader of the party he is not the default candidate.

I've just asked AI to confirm what I believe; this is the AI reply ...

No, under the rules of the Green Party of England and Wales, Zack Polanski is not automatically the default candidate to become Prime Minister because the party’s constitution separates its national organizational leadership from its parliamentary group leadership. [1, 2]

Yeah but no-one's interested in that and it's none of our business anyway.

The others need to learn to treat public scrutiny with the same level of disdain if they want to be considered strong leaders.

Good to know that normal people aren't allowed in politics. Only people with a scrupulous record of social media tweets, who have paid every bill correctly and only ever said nice things can progress to power.

Thank goodness for the probity and honesty of our political class.

It's the same reason Rayner was so harshly treated and the same reason Farage should be hounded to the nth degree about the 5 million quid he is claiming he no longer has and that does not unduly influence his conduct in public office.
I think you'll find that the first was for clicks and sales, whereas the second isn't palatable to the Daily Mail readership.

What is a 'normal' person, and why is it so important for potential statesmen (women) to be normal?

Cannot a 'normal' person live in a houseboat or mobile home?

Personally speaking I want my leaders to be a little bit different to us 'normal' people, otherwise we'd get nothing done

At the very least have a vague idea about whether you are allowed tonvote, if you want other people to vote for you. And what taxes you owe if you want to decide what taxes people should pay.

The higher standard is the cost of the higher profile to which he aspires. He needn't get there instantly, but by the same token it's not unfair to point out failings.

I had thought that pointing out to you that the local authority were not able to cut through the law on this that they have sought legal advice, that you might realise that things are not so simple as they might first appear. Polanski has said that he has set the money aside, if he is required to pay it, he will pay, if not he will give the money to charity.

I think a 'normal' person might cut him a little some slack. But it sounds like 'normal' people have decided what the London Borough of Waltham Forest could not without legal help.

PS .. I've always disliked the word 'normal'. I see the variously braindead and brainwashed folk completely normalised into the normal camp and think that isn't the right place for me.

We have a history of leaders with prior failings, including incitement to violence, being sacked for lying and fathering a variety of kids outside a stable relationship who turn out to be disasters. OTOH we have had more recent leaders, paragons of virtue, with a boring background, and a squeaky clean, conventional history who also turn out to be disasters.

I am not at all convinced that Polanski has what it takes to be a good leader but, other than proof of dishonest intent, I do not believe a disorganised and unconventional private life prevents someone from becoming a good leader.

I wouldn’t vote for Polanski to chair our charity far less an opposition party and even less to lead the country.
And I have nothing in principle against the Greens, if they have solid policies.
