Oh mate just get back in your box.

Okey dokey.

We've got pretty good public transport infrastructure here as it happens.

There's even a musical about it...

Which is vaguely terrible.

Still, it's something.

I have not been to Macclesfield, have you?
Nope. I can't find a flat more expensive than £1050 per month though (unless you include massively overpriced retirement flats). In London the very cheapest I can find is £1300. A lot of these are in very North London in insalubrious locations.
Are you sure the two flats you mention are directly comparable in all aspects.
I was comparing flats in general, not two flats.

The point is that it is undeniably far more expensive to live in the South East and London than it is in much of the rest of the country.

OK - I live in Walton on Thames. Outside of greater London. It's 30 minutes on the train.
A 1 bed flat here will cost you in the region of £1150 to £2000pm. Your annual season ticket for the train into London will cost you £268 per month.

So yes, not crucial to live in London if you work there but it's not hugely cheaper.

You could look at Colchester - £750 to £1000pm. Then add £681 per month for your season ticket to get into London.
Prices will vary around the country, some areas more expensive, others cheaper, eg Oxford (somewhat higher than Colchester). Leyton (on London Underground) £800 up, ...

I used to live in Oxford and it always frustrated me when those living in London got "London Weighting Allowance" extra pay.

Oxford has similarities with London. You use public transport to get around for example. An annual bus pass for Oxford is £895. A Zone 1 travelcard (annual) will cost you double that. Rents are cheaper (although not by much). The cost of a pint is very slightly cheaper in Oxford.

You get London weighting allowance because London is expensive.
