It's exactly this. Cynicism, accelerated by social media, in 'old-fashioned' politics has led to voting for people telling us what we want to hear. "We" as a result have now got the politicians "we" deserve.
On the teeth thing, Tony Blair had pretty bad teeth, and Cherie Blair had far too many. It's not a barrier to public life.
Can you give more context? What were they doing other than clapping? E.g. was that bloke lying down because he'd glued his bum to the pavement in support of Palestine Action or somesuch?

Some of the worst teeth I have ever seen were in the poorer areas of the US.
