Trump is worried about the threat from Russia so he needs Greenland yet Putin is Trump's new best friend and when it comes to Ukraine Russia is (according to Trump) totally trustworthy.

So where is the Russian threat requiring Trump control Greenland?

China is a threat there too. According to him.

In my mind China is not a threat to anyone in a war sense. They are simply taking control of the world through business.

It's bollox. Have a look at the map of mineral resources on Greenland. This is all about chip and AI resource procurement. Trump's not worried about Russia.

If there really is a threat, then given the USA already has bases on Greenland, why don't they un-mothball a few of them and station a few more boots there?
No need to steal Greenland from Denmark and the Greenlanders.

..... oh, hang on, it's about having a 51st State and the minerals isn't it?!

They don’t even need to own Greenland for the minerals, they can mine them anyway, the locals are open to that as they are not easily accessible.

I suspect as much as anything it's about showing they can strong-arm anyone they choose.

Apparently Denmark & Greenland have been trying to get US mining companies to move in to get the minerals but one are interested. Not cost effective as they are not accessible. Maybe Trump thinks he can bully those US mining companies into losing money ...

It's not actually clear that the US could do much of anything in Greenland, other than land a few soldiers by plane. I was reading the other day that they have presicely one elderly ice breaking ship, and that the waters are mostly patrolled by Canadian and Norwegian vessels.

Like so many things, the irony of the argument is that the US has also been remiss in the arctic.

What I suspect is happening is an attempt at some quid pro quo whereby Europe gets more of what it wants in Ukraine in exchange for Greenland. I hope that this will amount to offering what's already long been offered but more sychophantically. Indeed I think that's more likely than not, because the US has already pretty much forced the EU and UK to pull it's finger out with Ukraine, so he's already used a lot of that bargaining position.

That's what I said in post #10987 last night.

It would give Trump another chapter for 'his' book The Art of the Deal.

That's an exception because China regards Taiwan as part of China (which historically it was). Certain parallels with Russia and Ukraine.

Agreed. I was going to say that I knew that would be cast up. The difference was that China had not acted on their blustering (to my knowledge).
Donnie has now opened that door.
